Red squirrels grow long tufts on their ears in autumn and winter. Grey squirrels never have them.

There are thought to be fewer than 300,000 red squirrels in Britain, most of them in Scotland. Grey squirrels number in the millions.

A squirrel's nest is called a drey: a ball of twigs lined with moss and leaves, high up in a tree.

Squirrels don't hibernate. On cold days they stay in the drey and come out to visit their food stores.

The bushy tail helps a squirrel balance and steer when it leaps, and wraps round it like a blanket in the drey.
