Six things about the damselfly

Damsel

Damselfly or dragonfly?

Damselflies are slimmer than dragonflies, and most fold their wings along their body when they land.

Band

The dark band

The males have a blue-black band across each wing. The females are metallic green with pale greenish wings.

Flight

A butterfly's flutter

Their fluttery flight makes people think they're watching a butterfly at first.

Home

River dwellers

Look for them on slow-flowing rivers and streams with muddy bottoms, perched on waterside plants.

Dance

Showing off

Males flutter in front of females, flashing their wing bands, in a little courtship dance.

Babies

Underwater first

The larvae live underwater for a year or two before climbing a stem to become adults.

How to spot one

Walk along a slow, clean river or canal on a sunny day in June or July and watch the plants on the bank. The males flutter like dark-winged butterflies.

Lend a hand

How to help

Leave tall plants along the water's edge, and support keeping rivers clean: the nymphs need clear, flowing water.
