Good to know

Six things about the tawny owl

Call

Twit-twoo is two owls

"Twit-twoo" is usually a pair: the female calls "ke-wick" and the male answers "hoo-hoo-oo".

Head

Turning right round

Owls can't move their eyes in their sockets, so instead they can turn their head about three-quarters of the way round.

Silent

Silent flight

Soft, fringed edges on their feathers let owls fly almost silently, so their prey doesn't hear them coming.

Food

Mice and voles

Tawny owls mostly eat mice and voles, but also worms, beetles and small birds.

Home

Staying put

A pair of tawny owls often stays in the same territory for their whole lives.

Hearing

Super hearing

Their hearing is so good they can catch a mouse in the dark just by listening for it.

How to spot one

Listen on autumn and winter nights for the female's sharp "kee-wick" and the male's wavering hoot. By day, noisy mobbing by small birds can give away one roosting.

How to help

Keep big old trees with holes in them, and never use rat poison, which passes into owls through the mice they eat. A large nest box can work in mature gardens.
