Good to know

Six things about the spectacled bear

Marks

Glasses that differ

The cream markings are different on every bear, and some have hardly any.

Only

The only one

It is the only bear in South America, and the last of the short-faced bears.

Food

Mostly a vegetarian

It eats mainly fruit, bamboo and the hearts of spiky bromeliad plants.

Climb

A tree climber

It climbs high into trees and builds platforms of bent branches to feed and rest on.

Book

Paddington's cousin

Paddington Bear came from darkest Peru, so he must be a spectacled bear.

Shy

Shy and seldom seen

It avoids people, and is one of the least studied of all bears.

Out and about

How to spot one

The dry forests of northern Peru and the cloud forest of Ecuador give the best chance. Look for torn-up bromeliads and nests in trees.

Lend a hand

How to help

Spectacled bears are vulnerable, as cloud forest is cleared for farms. Support projects that pay farmers to keep forest standing.
