Good to know

Six things about the herring gull

Spot

The red spot

Chicks peck at the red spot on the parent's beak to ask for food.

Age

Four years to grow up

Young herring gulls are mottled brown. It takes them four years to get their grey and white adult feathers.

Dance

The rain dance

A gull will paddle its feet on grass to sound like rain, which brings worms to the surface.

Chips

Chip thieves

Gulls have learned that people mean food. Studies suggest they are less likely to grab it if you stare at them.

Decline

Fewer than you think

Although they seem to be everywhere, herring gull numbers have fallen so far that they are on the red list of threatened birds.

Age

A long life

A herring gull can live for more than 30 years.

Out and about

How to spot one

Look on rooftops, harbour walls and playing fields. The pink legs and pale grey back tell it apart from the lesser black-backed gull, which has yellow legs.

Lend a hand

How to help

Do not feed gulls, and keep food covered at the seaside. Bins with lids and less litter make for calmer gulls.
