Good to know

Six things about the golden eagle

Wings

Two metres across

A golden eagle's wings measure about two metres from tip to tip, with the feathers at the ends spread like fingers.

Eyes

Eagle eyes

It can spot a hare moving from well over a mile away.

Nest

An eyrie

The nest is called an eyrie. It is built on a cliff ledge and added to every year, so old ones can be huge.

Pairs

Together for life

Golden eagles pair for life and keep the same territory for many years.

Food

Hares and grouse

They hunt mountain hares, grouse and rabbits, and also feed on dead deer and sheep.

Numbers

A Scottish bird

Nearly all of Britain's golden eagles, about 500 pairs, live in Scotland.

Out and about

How to spot one

Look for a very large, dark bird soaring over a Highland ridge, with long wings held in a shallow V. A buzzard is far more common and much smaller, and often sits on fence posts.

Lend a hand

How to help

Never go near a nest: disturbing one is against the law. If you find a dead bird of prey, report it to the police or the RSPB.
