Good to know

Six things about the red deer

Size

Britain's biggest

The red deer is the largest wild land mammal in Britain. A big stag can weigh as much as three grown men.

Rut

The roar

In autumn the stags roar and clash antlers to win a group of females. This is called the rut.

Antlers

New every year

Stags shed their antlers each spring and grow a new, usually bigger, set by late summer.

Velvet

In velvet

Growing antlers are covered in soft, furry skin called velvet, which the stag rubs off when they are finished.

Calves

Spotted calves

Calves are born in early summer with white spots, and lie hidden in the heather or bracken.

Herds

Stags and hinds

For most of the year the males, called stags, and the females, called hinds, live in separate herds.

Out and about

How to spot one

Scan open hillsides with binoculars in the early morning or evening, and look for shapes on the skyline. In October, listen for stags roaring during the rut.

Lend a hand

How to help

Watch from a distance, especially during the rut and when calves are born in early summer. Keep dogs on leads, and never approach a calf lying on its own.
