Good to know

Six things about the brown rat

Clever

Quick learners

Rats are very intelligent. They learn routes, remember them and solve simple puzzles.

Teeth

Teeth that never stop

A rat's front teeth grow all its life, so it has to gnaw to keep them worn down.

Swimming

Good swimmers

Brown rats swim well and can hold their breath underwater.

Arrival

A newcomer

The brown rat only reached Britain in the 1700s, on ships. It mostly replaced the smaller black rat.

Clean

Cleaner than you think

Rats spend a lot of time washing and grooming themselves and each other.

Food

Food for others

Rats are eaten by barn owls, foxes, stoats and weasels.

Out and about

How to spot one

Look along riverbanks, canal edges and round farm buildings at dusk. You are more likely to see its signs: runs through grass, burrows and greasy smears along walls.

Lend a hand

How to help

Rats do best where food is left out. Keep bins shut, clear up spilt bird food, and they will not move in where they are not wanted.
